The franchise has been formerly known as the New England Whalers from 1972-79, the Hartford Whalers from 1979-1997 and finally the Hurricanes. They have secured one Stanley Cup win from 2005-06, and hold two Conference Championships and three Division Championships to their credit.
The franchise was originally a World Hockey Association member, and was admitted to the NHL when the two leagues merged in 1979. The team was not as successful in the NHL as it had been in the WHA, securing a winning record in only three seasons.
After a move from Hartford due to a lack of funding and leasing for a new arena in Hartford, the team moved to Raleigh and played for the first two seasons in Greensboro, 90-minutes from their new home town. This was a challenge for the team, as many fans were not willing to travel to see the team, and those in the Greensboro area did not want to support a team they would only have for a short time.
Carolina Hurricanes announced details April 4 of Fan Appreciation Weekend, held simultaneous with the teams last two games of the regular season.
When the Hurricanes host the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday, April 6, at the RBC Center, the first 15,000 fans through the turnstiles will receive a 2006-07 Carolina Hurricanes team poster from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. In addition, the game will feature a raffle for an authentic 2006 Stanley Cup championship ring, identical to that received by the triumphant players themselves. The opportunity to buy raffle tickets for the "Number One Fan" ring extends through the end of the second period at the Kids 'N Community kiosk, located adjacent to section 129. The winner will be drawn from the hat in the third period, and the ring awarded during the following night's game, when the Hurricanes host the Florida Panthers. This is the final regular game of the 2006-07 season, and the first 15,000 fans into the stadium will receive a Hurricanes hat, provided by Chevrolet. There will be a pre-game tent party on the lawn outside of the RBC Center, with live music, where fans can congregate and eat, drink, and be merry.
The end of season gesture is a big thank you to the loyal fans who stuck by them during what was a quite mediocre season. Its expected that the optimistic fans of Carolina will nevertheless be out hunting for Hurricanes tickets very soon, though, and the 18,000 plus seats of the RBC Center will once more be filled with roaring Carolina Hurricanes fans. Carolina's fans are said to have set the record for decibels generated by a crowd at an American sporting event. The Hockey News reported 134 decibels measured during Game 7 of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals against the Edmonton Oilers. This unofficial reading has never been surpassed before or since, and should serve as an inspiration to Hurricanes fans to make sure they have tickets to the important games of next season, when hopefully the Carolina Hurricanes will overcome their average season and triumph as their loyal fans deserve.
