The team holds no Stanley Cup wins, but has one Conference win from 1995-96. They were first owned by Blockbuster Video tycoon Wayne Huizenga in Miami, and their first season was one of the most successful for an expansion team, with a finish one point under .500 and a narrow miss for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. After another near playoff appearance in 1995, the coach was replaced.
The 1996 season started a new tradition for the team, after a rat ran across the locker room, Scott Mellanby who "one-timed" the rat and killed it when it hit the wall. That night he scored two goals, dubbed "a rat trick." Fans learned of the story and threw rubber rats onto the ice two nights later. The rat count started at 16 with that game, and progressed to over 2,000 on the ice during the playoffs. They were able to make it to the Stanley Cup finals, but were swept by the Colorado Avalanche in just four games.
