The Thrashers name is a tribute to Georgia's state bird, and was selected by fans in a statewide poll. The franchise plays in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division of the National Hockey League. The team plays in the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Their team colors are Midnight Blue, Bronze, Gold, Copper, Ice Blue and White. They hold no Division or Conference Championships, as well as no Stanley Cup wins. The team has never made the playoffs, but missed it by two points in 2005-06. In 2003 the NHL switched road and home jerseys.

After the team was sold to new management, tragedy struck as two players were involved in a high-speed accident that killed center Dan Snyder and left driver Dany Heatley with serious injuries, including a broken jaw and arm, gouged elbow and sprained wrist. In August of 2005 Heatley either requested a trade. There is question whether he was unpopular because of the request, or if he asked to be traded because of the opinion of him in Atlanta after the accident.

The Thrashers' Marietta Ice Center has received an Atlanta Thrashers makeover featuring huge likenesses of various Thrashers heroes Ilya Kovalchuk, Marian Hossa and Kari Lehtonen, on the exterior of the facility as a result of a partnership revealed today by Thrashers, Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena parent company Co-owner Rutherford Seydel. Images of their heroes should send kids and adults alike scurrying for Atlanta Thrashers tickets every time they pass the arena.

"We need more kids playing hockey and basketball in our community and are taking ownership with important community assets, such as the MIC, who are partnering with us to help grow our fan base," said Seydel. "We are extending a sizable amount of resources to make this program a success and are serious about developing life-long Thrashers and Hawks fans. The MIC has taken the lead as the first of many facilities we are proud to partner with as we continue to grow."

The Thrashers logo is featured on both the interior and exterior of the MIC, and a new sheet of ice is to be furnished in the arena. The surface is scheduled to be finished before March 31, and the Marietta Ice Center plans to hold a Grand Re-Opening celebration. The Thrashers will support the celebration and it is hoped will attend to be among their fans and possibly interact with the public.

"Kids want to wear the uniforms of the pro teams in town and this serves as a great platform to grow the youngsters that we serve from Sandy Springs, Buckhead and East Cobb into lifelong Thrashers hockey fans," Marietta Ice Center Owner David Falkenstein commented. "Our goal is to further extend to the community a sport that is not traditionally embraced by Southerners and this partnership will help expand our reach at the grass roots level."

Atlanta Thrashers and Hawks Fan plan to contribute to well being at Marietta Ice Center by providing coaching and youth clinics, and Junior Thrashers programming support throughout their youth hockey league season. There will also be a number of ticket incentives for those becoming part of the Thrashers community. The initiative is the first in a series of innovative community involvements by the Thrashers. More exciting possibilities will emerge as time passes, and people should remain on alert for Thrashers tickets as the hockey season comes around all too soon.
