The team colors are navy blue, gold, silver and white. Though they have never won a Stanley Cup, they hold three Conference Championships and four Division Championships. The name Sabre was chosen as it was known as a weapon carried by leaders, and it is also swift and strong on offense as well as defense.
After a few years of a good start, they missed the playoffs in 1974, but followed that year with a return and a tie for the NHL's best record in the league in the 1974-75 season. The team advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history. Some believed the team was cursed after a game that season in thick fog when a player killed a bat with his stick. The first time an animal was killed during a game was noted as bad luck. They won the game, but lost the series. The 2005-06 was the team's best in 20 years, they started strong and finished with a win for coach of the year.
