The franchise was known as the Atlanta Flames from 1972 to 1980 before relocating to Calgary. Their first three seasons were played at the Stampede Corral and they lost only 32 games during that time.
The team's cousins in Alberta are also their biggest rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. The teams face off in the Battle of Alberta that is looked forward to by both teams with much excitement. The Flames had great success right from the start which is rare for expansion teams. This success didn't cross over into the playoffs.
The team had its first 100 point season in 1987-88, and gained the award of the Presidents' Trophy for also holding the best record that season, ousting the Oilers from a six-year run. They were then swept by the team in the playoffs. After seven seasons out of the playoffs the team made it back in 2004.
