The spelling of the team's name changed in the 1986-87 season to Chicago Black Hawks. They play in the United Center, their home arena since 1994, and their colors are red, white and black. They are part of the "Original Six" teams in the NHL. The franchise holds three Stanley Cup wins, one conference championship and 13 Division Championships. Most of the team's first players came from the Portland Rosebuds' former team after the Western Canada Hockey League folded the previous season. The division was named after Chief Black Hawk, a prominent Illinois historical figure.

In 1927 team history says that owner Frederic McLaughlin tried to fire head coach Pete Muldoon because Muldoon didn't believe the team was good enough to finish first. According to sports writer Jim Coleman, Muldoon responded by yelling, "Fire me, Major, and you'll never finish first. I'll put a curse on this team that will hoodoo it until the end of time." This would become one of the first sports curses, th Curse of Muldoon. The team has won three Stanley Cups, but has never finished in first place either in a multi- or single-division format.

Blackhawks News

Chicago Blackhawks won the NHL draft lottery Tuesday April 10, giving them a reason cause for optimism after missing the playoffs recently for the eighth time in nine seasons.

Now the Blackhawks will pick first in the June draft despite their poor run, and it is this fact that their players and fans will use as a reason to celebrate the coming season.

This is the only time Chicago has ever picked first.

On the injury front, Martin Havlat will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder suffered during the 1st period against Nashville on April 3.

Michael Holmqvist ended the game with a shoulder injury later in the period, and stayed on the sidelines. It is believed he will be out for the rest of the season.

These injuries and their dismal attempt at making the playoff will not deter fans of the team from seeking Chicago Blackhawks tickets for next season.

The Blackhawks are fiercely proud of their fabulous home arena, the privately owned, 960,000 square feet United Center. The Center occupies a 46 acre parcel of land west of the Chicago Loop and claims to be the largest in the United States in size. Chicago Blackhawks tickets are in high demand in the Windy City, as natives, determined to see the Blackhawks make the playoffs and win the Championship, move to fill seats in the United Center and cheer on their heroes.
