The mid 1970s saw some poor seasons for the Stars, and they fell into financial peril. After being purchased in 1978, the team made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981, but lost to the New York Islanders. By the early 90s another boost was needed, and the team moved to Dallas after trying to get permission to go to San Francisco.
They won the 1999 Stanley Cup, and two Presidents' Trophies as they had the best overall season record. They have made some major personnel changes recently due to the poor performance of the team in the beginning of the 2006 playoffs. A new team captain was chosen in Brenden Morrow, replacing Mike Modano, captain since 2003.
Stars Update
The Dallas Stars, after a string of fine regular season performances with 50 wins and 107 points, were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Vancouver Canucks after taking the Canadians all the way to game 7. The poor five-game exit of last season to Colorado made this year’s playoff streak look better, but it still added up to another first-round loss for the Stars.
General Manager Doug Armstrong said he now requires a little while to ponder the future of his team. After this 2007s season’s scintillating exit, Armstrong appeared angry and exasperated at Dallas’ exit from the playoffs after almost going so close. This was a repeat of a pattern which has seen the Stars knocked out in the first round for the third consecutive season.
"We've been in the same spot three years in a row. Three years in a row, and tweaks aren't really working," Armstrong said. "It's frustrating. I thought we had the pieces in place to make a push. It's a little bit different this year than in years past. I thought our team was in better position to go deeper than maybe the last couple of years."
"We've had a core group here for a long time, and we have to be respectful of the work these guys do for 82 games," Armstrong said. "But at the end of the day, we're not getting the success we hoped for in the playoffs. So you have to balance out 107 points year in and year out with not playing hockey in May and then find out what's the best avenue to move forward."
The changes to the club structure remain to be seen, in both players, strategy and coaching staff, but the team are a close-knit bunch, and their fans are crazy for Dallas Stars tickets.
