Originally called the Detroit Cougars from 1926 to 1930, they changed their name to the Detroit Falcons until they became the Red Wings in 1932. The team plays in the Joe Louis Arena and their colors are red and white. The franchise holds 10 Stanley Cup wins, which is the lead among US teams. That is the third most wins in NHL history. Big players for the team have been Gordie Howe and Steve Yzerman. They are one of the most popular NHL teams, with regular home game sellouts.

The team made it to the Stanley Cup for the first time in 1929, and in 1932 when a rival hockey league, the AHL sprung up, the owner of the Falcons (called that from 1930-1932) suggested the owner of the Shamrocks buy the team. They merged, and the name became the Red Wings. During the early 1940s the team made the playoffs for three consecutive years. That decade they reached the finals three more times. The Legend of the Octopus is a tradition where an octopus is thrown onto the ice during playoff games.

During the 2007 playoff period, Red Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill announced that the team has signed forward Jan Mursak to a three-year entry-level contract. Mursak, 19, had completed his debut season in North America for Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit, and he was Detroit's sixth-round selection. The transfer market is abuzz with rumor and speculation this time of year, as the playoffs climax and the hunt for cheap Detroit Red Wings tickets heats up. Red Wings fans are devoted enough to continue their quest for hockey tickets, and will readily pay all kinds of money for red Wings tickets, once the new hockey season gets underway.

The Red Wings also received support from a junior neighbor who'd enjoyed recent success, when newly crowned NCAA hockey champions Michigan State visited Joe Louis Arena to support Detroit in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The college champions were honored during the first intermission of the game. The Spartans defeated Boston College, 3-1, in the title game last Saturday (April 7) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

During April 2007, the Red Wings owners unveiled a unique statue of Gordie Howe on the concourse at the Joe Louis Arena.

"Gordie Howe set a standard of greatness with his play that I've always tried to uphold as the owner of this storied franchise," owner Mike Ilitch said. "Gordie was the greatest player of his era and his grittiness on the ice embodied the hard-working spirit of Detroiters. I felt it was important to honor all that he has meant to this franchise and the city of Detroit."

The statue composes a dynamic and wild aspect, with white bronze dovetailed with glass chips, which simulate the ice. The statue stands 6-foot-4 inches in height and measures over 12 feet long. The statue and base combined weigh a mammoth 4500 pounds. The sides of the base describe Howe's personal history as an ice gladiator, etched in high polished black granite. The base's upper surface is white sand-blasted granite which again attains the effect of an ice surface.

The statue was created by artist Omri Amrany, who was noted for his creation of six steel Detroit Tigers players which appeared at the Tigers Hall of Fame statues at Comerica Park in 2000. The statue is a fitting tribute to the man who gave so much to his fans, people who know what it means to hold Detroit Red Wings tickets in their hands, and to enter the Joe Louis Arena and proudly take their seats. Detroit are hoping the next season brings them what they deserve, and a championship falls into their grasp.
