The team plays in the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California and their colors are purple, silver and black. Originally their colors were purple and gold, the colors of royalty and also of the Los Angeles Lakers, as they shared an owner. The Kings have won no Stanley Cups, but hold a Conference Championship from 1992-93 and a Division Championship win from 1990-91. The team was formed because of the Pacific Coast Hockey League's proposal to become a major league and compete for the Cup. Instead the NHL expanded into Los Angeles to prevent the extra competition.

Their first season saw the Kings in second place for their Division. After a rough patch, they returned to playoff contention in 1973-74 and 1975-76. Bob Miller became the team's play-by-play announcer in 1973, and has become a Hall of Fame announcer, still working with the Kings to this day. One of the biggest comebacks in playoff history was between the Edmonton Oilers and their star Wayne Gretzky. It was called the "Miracle on Manchester" when the Kings returned against the Oilers 5-0 lead to win it in the third period, 6-5.

Kings news Update

The Los Angeles Kings ended their '06-'07 season by beating the Phoenix Suns 3-2 in the knowledge that a major defensive hole requires plugging at the back. The Kings' goaltending woes transformed what might have been a mediocre season into an underachieving stop-gap. This feeling will undoubtedly extend into next season, ramping up the sense of urgency associated with solving this glaring omission in the team's functional shape. General Manager Dean Lombardi needs to address this issue if the Kings are to triumph and make the playoffs next year, as a club representing such a large slice of American sports lovers surely must.

The 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes in front of a capacity crowd of over 18,000 at Staples Center did provide some momentary hope in a power-play goal with less than a minute remaining to keep the Kings off bottom spot in the Western Conference, but this was really too little too late.

The last-gasp winner guaranteed the Coyotes finished in last place, and coach Marc Crawford said, "It is a pretty fitting way for our season to end. We've had to battle to be any good. We could not win games this year if we didn't have a great effort. I can't be too critical of the effort our veteran players gave this year and our young players followed with."

This the joint-longest poor streak in the club's history as the Kings failed to make the playoffs for the fourth straight season. But optimism is the way forward. The answer surely is to buy Los Angeles Kings tickets, head out to the Staples Center and enjoy the day. Surely the Kings will be coming good sometime very soon.
