They have yet to win any Division, Conference Championships or Stanley Cups to date. The team was named after the skull fossil of a saber-toothed cat that was found in 1971in a cave in Nashville.
The team first made it to the playoffs in the 2003-04 season, but were beaten by the Detroit Red Wings, their rival. A unique tradition that the fans of the game have created is called catfish throwing. The first time a fan threw a catfish onto the ice was Oct. 30, 2003, and four were thrown after the first goal on Nov. 13. This tradition mimics the Detroit Red Wings tradition of throwing octopi on the ice.
In the 2005-06 season the Predators set a record in the NHL, winning their first four games of the season by one goal each. They were also the fourth franchise in the NHL to start a season 8-0. They had their first 100 point season, and went on to the 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs where they would lose to the San Jose Sharks in five games.

With a 3-2 victory against the Predators, San Jose won the best-of-seven Western Conference Quarterfinal series 4 games to 1, eliminating the Preds from the playoffs in game 5 with 4:21 remaining in regulation. Sharks Captain Patrick Marleau scored the goal which broke the 2-2 tie, propelling the San Jose team through to possible glory. Nashville fans could be forgiven for thinking they were experiencing déjà vu, in a similar ending to their season to that of last year. Despite the disappointment it is expected that Predators tickets will still be in high demand next season.
Their NHL seasons over, several of the Nashville Predators will make the trip to Moscow to compete for their nations in the 2007 IIHF World Championship. Nashville will provide quite a few stars to the tournament, including defensemen Dan Hamhuis and Shea Weber, who will play for their native Canada. Ryan Suter is traveling to represent the U.S. and Marek Zidlicky will appear for the Czech Republic. Russian winger Alexander Radulov, who performed amazingly for a first-year player this past season, will also appear for his country, and the young record-breaker (goals and points for a first-year player) is expected to impress, to the joy of his countrymen and Nashville natives alike. The World Championship tournament, begins Friday April 27 with a preliminary round, and climaxes at the finals on May 13.
Those lucky enough to catch some of the action will be savoring the season to come, especially those who intend to secure Nashville Predators tickets and grace the seats in the Nashville Arena.
