It takes the league's star players and pits them against each other. Fans vote in players and the goalie for the starting line-up, and the remainder of the players are chosen by the NHL's Hockey Operations Department, along with the General Managers of the teams. Usually the coaches that are at the head of the leading teams are chosen to coach the All-Star teams. The first All-Star game was played in the 1947-48 NHL season. But before the NHL existed, in 1908 an All-Star game was played in the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association after a player drowned, and the proceeds went to his family.

In 2003 the game, after years of adjustments to the way it was organized, reverted to the classic East meets West format. An All-Star record was set when Dany Heatley scored five goals, counting a shootout goal. This became the way that tied-games would be decided from that point forward. Heatley was also the youngest player to score a hat trick. The All-Star game was affected by the NBA lockout in 2004-05, and the resulting bargain determined that the game would only be held in non-Olympic years, and so the next season, 2005-06 did not hold a game either.
