It is also the oldest, first inscribed in 1892 and donated by Lord Stanley of Preston. A new cup is not made every year, the same is passed on from team to team, who are permitted to keep it until the next championship is won. The Cup holds the names of the winning coaches, management and players inscribed on its chalice. It is the only professional sports trophy that does this.
The ring that was written on filled up in 1902, and teams began to inscribe on the bowl itself. A new band was added until the Cup became too tall and resembled a stove pipe. Today a five-band barrel exists and a new blank band is added to the base to maintain its size, with the top band preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The cup quickly gained prestige, and the game began to attract a higher caliber of players. The Stanley Cup was not awarded in 1919. The years following all saw a cup awarded, until 2005 when the NHL's labor dispute caused a cancellation of the 2004-05 season.
