The ice hockey team is the only major league team in the capital of Canada. The franchise plays in Scotiabank Place. The team colors are red, black, white and gold. The team holds division championships from 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2006. They are the second team to hold the name Ottawa Senators, as the first existed from 1893 to 1934.

The current franchise was brought into the NHL as an expansion team. In 1996 the team moved into the 18,500 seat Palladium in Kanata, Ontario. That year would mark a turnaround for the team, though their record was poor. The first team member to win the Calder Memorial Trophy, the NHL's Rookie of the Year award, was Danile Alfredsson. The next year the team made the playoffs for the first time, clinching the final seed with a last minute goal.

The years between 1998 and 2001 were not as kind, as the team was swept by the Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres, and lost another series to the Leafs. The team filed for bankruptcy in 2003, and with emergency funds from the NHL were able to continue with the regular season.
