They were first called the Winnipeg Jets from 1972 to 1996. They have been the Coyotes since 1996. The team plays at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Their team colors are brick red, sand, black and white.

As the Winnipeg Jets, they were one of the founding World Hockey Association franchises, and the most successful in the league with three Avco World championship trophies. The team made the finals in 5 of the WHA's 7 seasons. The two rival teams merged in 1979. Since then the team holds no Stanley Cups, Conference or Division Championship titles. As the Jets, the franchise made the playoffs 11 times after the merger, winning but two playoff series.

The team moved to Arizona in 1996. Their record improved as the Coyotes, posting six .500 seasons in a row, making the playoffs in all but one of those years. They became the first team to post 90 points and not make the playoff series that year. The franchise has not seen a playoff series since 1987.
