The franchise holds two Stanley Cup wins, from 1990-91 and 1991-92. They have won five division championships, progressing to the Conference Championships twice. The NHL doubled in size in 1967-68, and Pittsburgh was one of six cities awarded an expansion team.
The early years were tough, as the team missed the playoffs in five of the first seven seasons on the ice. IN the mid-70s the team began to improve, getting closer to the Stanley Cup as better team members through trades improved the team's standing. Later trades would return them to a tough patch that would have the team suffering in the 1980s.
They had the league's worst record in 1983 and 1984, which gained them the right to the number one draft pick, and they chose legendary Mario Lemieux. He would go on to become one of the greatest NHL players in history. By 1988-89 the team was back in the playoffs, and in 1990-91 they reached the top, beating the Minnesota North Stars for the Stanley Cup in just six games.

The Pittsburgh Penguins Summer Hockey School, following on from the try-out camp in the spring at Ice Castle Arena in Castle Shannon, provides budding young skaters the opportunity to train with and learn from the professionals. Penguins assistant coach, Mike Yeo will be the head instructor at the summer school, and radio analyst and former Penguin, Phil Bourque, will also be on hand to help. The camp runs for five-days, offering those who attend fifteen hours of ice time per week. There will be on-ice instruction from Yeo and Bourque and other off-ice activities, to build fitness and confidence. Power Skating Sessions with Besa Tsinsadze are also part of the training featured which gives young people a chance to witness first hand the type of specialized practice enjoyed by the elite of the hockey world. The School teaches important skills from the perspective of the very best in the hockey world, but functions also as a character building exercise for young people which will set them in good stead for the years ahead. The Pittsburgh Penguins Summer Hockey School Camp will be held at the RMU/Island Sports Center on Neville Island. This is a great chance for parents, kids, and professional hockey players to come together as a community and to plan their lives and worlds around successful sporting endeavor. Needless to say the kids at the school will all be in search of Pittsburgh Penguins tickets when the season begins again, to witness the exact moves they were taught by their heroes during their time at this magical place.
