The Tampa Bay Lightning were founded in 1992 and play in the Eastern Conference's Southeast Division in the National Hockey League.

The team started out with stars before a single player was on their roster. Boston Bruins star Phil Esposito became president and general manager, and his brother Tony, who had played for the Chicago Blackhawks became chief scout. Terry Crisp, a notable Philadelphia Flyers former player and coach of the Calgary Flames in 1989 when they made it to the Stanley Cup. They were later removed when ownership changed during the 1998-99 season.
The group brought in a number of other successful players and management members, and turned heads when Manon Rheaume played as the first woman player in one NHL game between the Lightning and the St. Louis Blues in 1992. The next season saw a move to the Florida Suncoast Dome, which was reconfigured from a baseball stadium for hockey and renamed the Thunderdome. In 2003-04 the team finished first in the Eastern Conference, and second in the league. They won the series and took home their first Championship, and first Stanley Cup, only three years after losing 50 games.

A hard-fought close series with the New Jersey Devils saw the Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated in the sixth game of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals series against the Devils. Despite two Brad Richards goals, Tampa Bay made their final home ice appearance of the series in a game that saw much intelligent networking during special plays. Richards and Brian Gionta were highest scorers in the contest, with two goals each, and Patrik Elias provided three assists as the Devils pushed confidently through to the next phase.
At the end of the Lightning's 2006-07 season, the Tampa Bay team is beginning to think about welcoming fans back in October to the NHL. When Lightning fans pour back into the St. Petersburg Times Forum next season, they’ll be hungering for a new beginning and better success, clutching hard-earned Tampa Bay Lightning tickets and taking their places in the seats to watch the team they love.
