The team originated in the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL), winning championships in their first and third year of existence. The league merged with another to become the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1952, where they would win the Cup in 1958, 1960, 1969 and 1970. When the NHL announced an expansion in 1965, Vancouver applied but was denied. In 1970 after a change in ownership the team joined the NHL for $6 million. It would only have cost $2 million three years prior.

The team's colors are midnight blue, standard blue, red, white and silver. They play in the General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia. They hold conference championship wins from 1981-82 and 1993-94, but have never won a Stanley Cup. A new coach was brought in June of 2006, Alain Vigneault, who had just coached the AHL's Manitoba Moose to a 102-point season. First draft pick Ryan Kesler was offered a $1.9 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers that year, which the Canucks matched to keep him, making the first offer sheet extension to a restricted free agent in eight years.
