Though they have never secured a Stanley Cup, the team won a Conference Championship in 1997-98 and holds three Division Championships from 1998-89, 1999-00 and 2000-01.
The Capitals management made one of the biggest trades in the franchises' history in 1982. Longtime players Ryan Walter and Rick Green to the Montreal Canadiens for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin. It turned around the franchise, and brought them to the playoffs in 1983. It was their first ever playoff appearance. For the next 14 years the team would make it to the playoffs, but it would all end painfully.
The team would have their only Stanley Cup finals appearance in 1998, with star scorer Peter Bondra leading the team with 52 goals. They beat the Ottawa Senators and then the Buffalo Sabres in a dramatic double-overtime win in the final game. The Detroit Red Wings would finally overcome the Caps, sweeping the team in four games.
